CFR Case Studies

Harvard School of Public Health
The RARE public housing study was conducted to determine if cleaning was a feasible and effective intervention in improving health and reducing the frequency of asthma in low-income public housing facilities.

The CFR Performa O-Z "Ozone Assisted Cleaning System" was used in five apartments to clean all fabric materials including upholstered furniture, carpet, and mattresses at the beginning of the study and again, four months later. Findings from the study revealed:    View the full case study here.

Microbiological Efficacy of CFR’s Ozone Assisted Cleaning System

CFR’s Ozone Assisted Cleaning system has been evaluated and has demonstrated the disinfecting power of ozone in the tank against a broad spectrum of microorganisms. Cleaning of carpet swatches with a heavy microbial load resulted in reductions ranging from 91% to 96%.
Cross contamination to clean carpet swatches was less than 1.1%. CFR’s Altra 400 OZ SP, when compared to a typical extractor, is more effective in reducing the level of a broad spectrum of microorganisms on carpet and eliminating microbial cross contamination. Air sampling has shown that the Altra 400 OZ SP aerosolizes significantly fewer microorganisms than a typical extractor. Overall, the CFR Ozone Assisted Cleaning system has shown consistently superior microbiological efficacy over a typical carpet extractor.

Minnesota Public Schools

Staff members had been suffering respiratory distress whenever working in the office at school. Indoor air quality studies over a 2 year period of time were unable to determine the cause.

Tamarack Environmental Inc., using micro vacuuming dust sampling techniques, identified elevated microbial levels in the carpet with the primary fungus present: Aspergillus versicolor. This fungus is known to cause upper respiratory infections and has been associated with occupational asthma and hypersensitivity pneumonitis reactions in office occupants.

Carpet Microbial Levels in the Workplace

Purpose: This case study is designed to show that with the use of proper cleaning equipment and procedures that the microbial loading in carpeted floors can be greatly reduced.

The building owner/manager can have an effective tool in the control of indoor air quality problems related to microbial loading in carpet when proper carpet cleaning equipment is used. Proper cleaning of carpet will also increase the useful life of the carpet.

The Cleaning Machine: The CFR "ALTRA 400 O-Z, SP" is able to inject cleaning solution into carpet under a pressure of 400 pounds of pressure per square inch (psi). The "ALTRA 400 O-Z, SP" also is able to instantly recover up to 98% of cleaning solution, so carpets dry in about an hour.

Carpet and Indoor Air Quality at Schools

Purpose: This case study is designed to show that with the use of proper cleaning equipment and procedures that the microbial loading in carpeted floors can be greatly reduced. One of the leading causes of asthma and allergy problems in building occupants are excessive levels of microbials in buildings.

This will give school districts a more effective tool in the control of microbial loading in carpet. Proper cleaning of carpet will also increase the useful life of the carpet.
